FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the items stored?

All items are stored in secure, 24-hour CCTV monitored premises. True to our name, our warehouse is local to each university. Our warehouse is located in between St Andrews and Edinburgh giving close proximity to both locations!

What security measures are in place?

Each facility has secure locks, alarm systems and 24-hour CCTV.

Do you offer shipping?

Yes! We can offer shipping through one of our preferred partners. Shipping orders are organised on a case by case basis depending on your requirements and so we abide by the T&Cs of the chosen provider at the time which we can send to you at the time of booking.

What are the collection and return dates?

You can select collection and return dates as you move through our online booking section! Our usual period is from the end of term time (after your exams) until the start of the next term. This is usually May/June until September/October, however we can collect and return items throughout the year. Please select the number of months of storage that you need (usually 4 months for the university summer). We can always extend this if needed!

Where do you collect items from?

For halls of residence, we collect and deliver items back to the reception areas only. For private residences, we collect/deliver your items from the ground floor/entrance of your block (if in a flat) or the hallway/ground floor of your house. If your items are not ready to be collected when we arrive, we will have to rearrange your collection. We’re pretty lenient, however in certain circumstances this may result in a missed collection fee of £40 in order to rearrange the service.

Are there any items you won’t collect?

  • Single-walled cardboard boxes
  • Bin bags, plastic bags, laundry bags
  • Any goods containing liquids, chemicals or food

How do I book my return?

Simply click ‘Manage Booking’ on the website and select ‘edit return date’. You can then change your return address and return date! You can do this up to 48h before needing the return.

How quickly can I organise for my items to be returned?

Within 48h!

Will you notify me before my collection/return date?

We have innovative tracking software which will notify you the day before when our logistics team has booked your order into our system. You will also receive a notification when the driver has left the warehouse, and when they are 20 minutes away from you. You will then receive a success notification as well as a picture when the items have been collected or returned!

What if I want to store more or less items with you after I have placed my order?

Not to worry! Simply have everything that you want to store ready for your collection day. Our collection team will calculate your order cost when they arrive to collect your items. If you need more standard boxes, reply to your order confirmation with the number of extra standard boxes you need – if we can, then we’ll bring you more!

What will be my collection time?

Our drivers will be with you between 8AM-6PM on the day you have chosen for your delivery or collection. On particularly busy days, we may arrive after 6PM and we will give you notice of this via a call, e-mail or text message beforehand so you don’t have to wait for us. You can specify an exact time for an additional fee through our online booking system. We also use tracking software so that you can track our drivers as well as receiving notifications to update you on their whereabouts throughout the day.

When do you offer free collection and delivery?

Each area has set dates for free collection and delivery of items. Free collection is offered typically during the end of the summer term, and free delivery is available at the start of the following term for a period of 3 weeks. Outside these dates, there is a small charge for delivery or collection to reflect our costs in sending out a van for a small number of tasks. You can see all available dates during the booking process!

Is it possible to get my items delivered early?

Absolutely. However, we do charge a £40 return fee for items returned before September to represent the price of sending our van team out for one single journey.

What if I don’t know my return date or address yet?

Don’t worry, simply select the ‘Not Sure Yet’ option when choosing your return details. You can update this at any time through the ‘Manage Booking’ section.

Do I need to be present when my items are collected/returned?

No, you don’t need to be present when we collect your items. If you are in halls of residence we will collect your items from reception so that you don’t have to wait around for us! Alternatively, if you’re not in halls, we are happy to leave your items with a delegated flatmate. You will receive a ‘success’ notification and a picture when we collect/return your items!

What happens if I forget to organise the delivery of my items?

We can extend your storage if needed, and if you do not contact us then we will begin extending your storage at the monthly prices outlined on the website.

How does payment work?

On checkout you can choose either to pay now or to pay later. If you choose to pay now, any unused boxes will be refunded to your account after collection. If you choose to pay later, we will send you an invoice once we collect your items. You can always add items to your storage order – simply send us an email and leave the new items beside your other items ready for us to collect (clearly labelled with your name). We will then include this in the invoice.

What is included in the price?

The prices that you see include the delivery of empty boxes and packaging tape (if needed), collection of items, storage for the whole summer, and the return of items for a two week period around Freshers’ Week when most students return to university. In some instances we may add an extra fee for collecting or returning items if they are outwith the regular summer storage period from the period at the end of exams until Freshers’ Week.

Is insurance included?

No. Insurance can be organised through us by selecting the insurance option when booking. See the Insurance Policy for more details.

In the case of a claim, proof must be provided of any damage caused through before and after photos.  If you require more insurance cover, this must be arranged separately by you. Electrical items eg computer screens, must be stored in their original packaging.

Will I be refunded if I don’t use all of the boxes?

Yes! Refunds will be issued within one week after collection for customers who choose the ‘Pay Now’ option at checkout and do not use all of the boxes or store all of the items that they have paid for. Only customers choosing the ‘Pay Now’ option at checkout are eligible for refunds. Refunds will be made for the total number of items paid for but not stored, minus any fees charged by our payment partner.

No refunds will be made for students who request an early delivery of their items before the summer storage period is up. Local Student Storage charges a minimum 3 months storage, and early returns are not eligible for a refund of any unused months.

We ask that you return all your unused boxes or you will be charged £5 per box that was delivered but unreturned.

What if I want to store more or fewer items with you after I have placed my order?

Not to worry! Simply have everything that you want to store ready for your collection day. Our collection team will calculate your order cost when they arrive to collect your items. If you need more standard boxes, reply to your order confirmation with the number of extra standard boxes you need – if we can, then we’ll bring you more!

Are there any fees for boxes that are too heavy or overpacked?

If your item exceeds the weight limit you may be given a fee of up to £20 by the collection team for that item (at the discretion of the collection team). This is to cover the cost required for additional packaging and care.

If your item exceeds the dimensions the item will be moved to the next category of pricing. In order not to exceed the dimensions, the boxes must meet these conditions: the top must be completely flat and at a 90-degree angle with the sides; the flaps on the top and bottom must perfectly meet and the box must have no bulges anywhere on the box. These rules are in place as the standard boxes are stacked in our facility and we cannot stack overpacked boxes.

Are there any other fees?

We are generally pretty lenient with extra fees as we understand that moving out can be stressful for students and, as a company set up by students, we get that some things are out of your control. However, in some instances whereby we are unable to collect or return your items on multiple occasions we will charge a £40 fee to reflect the cost to us in reorganising the service.

We offer free cancellations up to 48h before your order, however cancellations within 48h will not be eligible for refunds as our team will have booked the order into our system and organised the drivers and the route to include your order. If you cancel after we have already delivered boxes to you, there will be a £40 fee (but you can keep the boxes!).

When do you offer free collection and delivery?

Each area has set dates for free collection and delivery of items. Free collection is offered typically during the end of the summer term, and free delivery is available for a period of three weeks around the start of the following term. Outside these dates, there is a small charge for delivery or collection to reflect our costs in sending out a van for a small number of tasks.

I have some items that won’t fit into a box or a suitcase, can you store it for me?

If it won’t fit into a box or suitcase then you can book it in as a bulky item eg golf clubs, bedside table, computer screen etc.  It is your responsibility to ensure that it is protected with suitable packaging to protect it.

What if I need to store my items for longer than I originally thought?

That’s no problem! We can extend storage for as long as you need and will simply charge a monthly price per item stored as per our website pricing. For storage over 12 months we offer a 20% discount. Simply let us know two weeks before your storage period is due to run out if you’d like to extend and we’ll organise this for you.

Can I store my items for less than 3 months?

Yes, however please note that we have a minimum charge which is based on the three months of storage, and so the quote will be the same whether you store for one month or three months. This is because we offer either free or discounted collection and return prices for each order which require a minimum storage term.

Can I get my items back from storage early?

Of course! You can manage your booking at any time through the ‘Manage Booking’ tab and select a return date, however you MUST also get in touch with us directly at least 1 week ahead to arrange this as we don’t always have availability at short notice.

Please note that there may be a price for getting your items delivered early to reflect the cost in our logistics team having to locate and return one student’s items out of the regular returns period (around Freshers’ Week). Please note that we do not refund any unused storage time due to the fact that once students have left university, we are unable to reallocate your storage space and thus is it allocated to you for the whole summer whether you organise an early return or not.

Is there anything I can’t store?

Yes… we cannot store the following items in our facilities:

  • Gas cylinders. Deeply refrigerated flammable, non-flammable, and poisonous gases such as butane, oxygen, propane, and aqualung cylinders. Includes butane gas (eg for use with heated hair appliances) camping gas, and chef’s blow torches.
  • Flammable liquids and solids such as lighter or heater fuels, paint, and matches.
  • Poisons such as insecticides, weed killers, arsenic, and cyanide.
  • Radioactive material, oxidising materials, and organic peroxides such as bleaches and fibreglass repair kits.
  • Firearms and explosives. Handguns, automatic weapons, munitions, ammunitions including blank cartridges, pistol caps, fireworks, flares, smoke canisters, and crackers.
  • Infectious substances such as bacteria and viruses.
  • Corrosives such as mercury, acids, alkalis, and wet-cell batteries.
  • Animals, alive or dead.
  • Any form of liquid, or containers with liquid(s) inside, unless they are completely wrapped and sealed in non-porous plastic, and have been checked by a member of our staff. This includes printer cartridges

These items are forbidden in order to keep yours and other customers items safe as well as our staff members. If we are to find any of these items in storage, they will be removed and disposed of without warning. We also reserve the right to search your remaining items to check for any further forbidden items.

These are items that we won’t be liable for:

  • Glass, crockery and other fragile items
  • Goods with any glass element
  • Electronics
  • Jewellery
  • Antiques
  • The outside of suitcases, bags, plastic containers and hard cases for instruments

Can I store items other than boxes/suitcases?

Of course. Measure the item, and select whichever product it most closely resembles in size. Then send us an email with some more details.

I have my own boxes, can I use those?

Of course, simply select the ‘Own Boxes’ option on the online store.

Do you provide packaging tape?

Yes! We have our very own branded packaging tape 🙂

How should I label my boxes?

We’ll deliver a permanent marker when we deliver your boxes, so please clearly write your full name on each item to be stored! If your items aren’t labelled, we may need to rearrange the collection.

What sizes are the boxes?

Standard Box: outside dimension 457x305x305mm, under 15KG in weight.

Large Box: outside dimension 508x406x406mm, under 20KG in weight.

Suitcase/Bag: Under 0.75m on any one outside dimension (except golf bags), under 1.6m on all 3 outside dimensions added together, under 25KG in weight.

Trunk: Under 30kg in weight, over 1.6m on all 3 outside dimensions added together.

If your item exceeds the weight limit you may be given a fee of up to £40 by the collection team for that item (at the discretion of the collection team). This is to cover the cost required for additional packaging and care.

If your item exceeds the dimensions, the item will be moved to the next category of pricing.

Is it possible to access my things during the summer?

Due to the logistics of the storage facility this is unfortunately not possible. But don’t worry – we’ll collect and deliver everything for you!

How many boxes should I order?

On average, our customers use around 6 boxes (a mixture of small and large) plus a suitcase or two. We recommend that you order more boxes than needed as you only pay for what you use. Also be aware of our weight restrictions – so it is often a good idea to have spare boxes that you can use to distribute weight if necessary. Please return any unused boxes or you will be charged for these (if you want to keep them and be charged that’s ok too!).

How does it work?

Our service is super simple! We deliver you packing materials (small and large boxes with tape), return to collect them at the date selected and then store the items at a secure storage facility over the summer until you return to university! Everything can be booked through the website and you can select specific dates and times for us to collect your items. You can then manage your booking through the website and organise your return through the ‘Manage Booking’ tab at any time! We have a minimum 3 month storage period to reflect the university summer term.

We also have innovative tracking software so you can track our drivers on the day of your order!
